We are never far from the state of mind we wish to have. Happiness, sadness, tortured, peace, depression or contentment. Our minds are so powerful and capable of outstanding achievements that can and will determine our feelings and emotions.

The way in which we perceive the information the brain is given has been engineered throughout our lifetimes and trained to react based upon the meaning we have given to any situation. We have trained our mind so well that reactions are happening in the background, and often, we forget that it’s even doing what we’ve programmed it to.

For example, if you hit your finger with a hammer and immense pain radiates through your body, the reaction you have is a choice. One person may cuss and throw the hammer blaming it for causing them so much pain, while another person may grind their teeth and blame themselves for the amount of pain they have caused. Each of these examples are based on the meaning they gave to the pain and the learned reactions stemming from it.

We can alter our reactions no matter what the situation if we understand that we have to first change the meaning we’ve given it. I spent decades blaming life for the shortcomings I’ve been given and placing blame on others for the pain I’ve suffered.

I’ve learned over the last several years and even more so recently that all of those years I was wrong. The depression, anxiety, panic, while all real emotions and the seat of them were and will always be a part of my genetic make-up, were prolonged by my misguided ideological perspectives. Once I changed my state of mind, my perspectives also changed.

What we focus on will determine the meaning we give to life. Choose wisely and remember, that the state of mind can be changed when we accept that change is possible.
